PLAGIOCEPHALY / FLAT HEAD SYNDROME

Here at New Ireland Orthotics we have started working with Technology in Motion to provide helmet therapy. Flat head syndrome is the umbrella term for a flat head condition that can appear in babies and infants.

The deformity may be present at birth or can become apparent during the first few months of an infant’s life. Flat head syndrome can cause your baby’s head to appear asymmetric ormisshapen from above.

Although cases of mild flat head syndrome often correct themselves, severe cases often require a form of flat head syndrome treatment. The treatment that is recommended depends on the infant’s age and type of deformity they have. Non-surgical flat head treatment can improve all types of head shape deformity including the more common plagiocephaly and brachycephaly.

For babies who have developed a mild case of the condition, it is usually recommend that repositioning techniques are used to help improve a head shape that is starting to deform. If your baby is over four months old and their head is not self-correcting, our specialists can help to reduce the severity of the deformity with orthotic flat head syndrome treatment.

Between four and seven months is the ideal age for helmet therapy as by then repositioning techniques begin to have limited success. Here at New Ireland Orthotics we work together with Technology in motion to provide a helmet service. The TiMband™ or TiMbandAir™ is modelled to the exact shape of your baby’s head and is made by expert clinician orthotists.

This plagiocephaly helmet will gently correct the head shape as your baby grows, whilst being comfortable and safe to wear.

“‘I am very pleased with the shoes and service I have had from Nicola. The shoes fit me perfectly and are both flexible and sturdy. I can walk much better and straighter because
they fit so well and they compensate for the difference in the length of my legs and twisted ankles. Everyone was very helpful. “
